The majority of DOE's budget goes not to energy but to maintaining the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile through the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The department also funds cutting-edge research at 17 national laboratories (including Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Fermilab), supports clean energy development and grid modernization, manages the strategic petroleum reserve, and oversees cleanup of legacy nuclear waste sites. Recent legislation has significantly increased DOE's budget for clean energy programs, loan guarantees, and advanced manufacturing.
