Summary

Created after 9/11 by merging 22 existing agencies, DHS is responsible for border security (Customs and Border Protection), immigration enforcement (ICE), disaster response (FEMA, which manages the National Flood Insurance Program and provides disaster relief), transportation security (TSA, screening 2.5 million air travelers daily), the U.S. Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and cybersecurity operations (CISA).
